Obituary for Joseph W. "Joe" Pollard

Joseph W. "Joe" Pollard
Joseph Wesley Pollard passed away peacefully at his home on June 9th. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Joe was born on May 20, 1934 to James Taylor and Julia Kathleen (Faulkner) Pollard in Lancaster, KY.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Suzanne (Schotta), daughter Joanne Miriam Frame (Jack) and son James Taylor Pollard II (Michelle) and seven adoring grandchildren, Hayden, Charley, Madison, Avery, Sawyer, Ally and Jackson.
He graduated from Centre College in Danville, KY with a degree in Physics, where he played four years of varsity football. The entire team was inducted into the Centre College Hall of Fame on the 50th Anniversary of their undefeated season.
Joe was awarded an assistantship to Ohio University in the physics department and received his Master’s degree in physics in 1958.
Joe had a 31 year career at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, where he started as a crew captain to run nuclear reactors and ended up in fuel development. He also had a three year stint in Uncasville, Connecticut as resident manager of United Nuclear.
He met his wife Sue on a blind date on Friday, the 13th in 1963 in Baltimore, Maryland. They were married the following November and returned to Schenectady in July 1965.
Joe was a devoted community servant. He was a volunteer fireman and head of the commissioners for the Ballston Lake Fire Department. He was a vice president of the Ballston Lake Improvement Association and helped to start the clean-up day program for the area. He was also secretary for the administrative board of the Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, a youth leader and a Sunday school teacher.
His latest community effort was to start the sewer committee for the Town of Ballston along with neighbor and friend, Arnold Azarow.
His first love after his family was restoring antique cars. He belonged to the Adirondack A’s Model A Ford Club where he took an interest in helping introduce young people to the hobby. The club is ready to start its third student restoration project.
Joe had a vast collection of antique cars in various stages of restoration including Model A’s, a 1934 Ford truck and a 1924 Studebaker which he drove in the Burnt Hills Flag Day Parade.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to the J.T. and Kat Memorial Scholarship Fund #3728, Wilmington Trust Retirement and Institutional Services, 1100 North Market Street, 2nd Floor, Wilmington, DE 19890, the Ballston Lake Fire Department or the Ballston Lake Ambulance Squad.
A memorial service in Joe’s honor will be held at the Burnt Hills United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 14th at 1:00 pm.
The family would like to thank Dr. David Armenia, Dr. Robert Donahue and all the nurses on the 4th floor cardiac wing of Ellis Hospital for all the loving care given to Joe over the years.
