Obituary for Richard J. "Dick" Colyer

Dateline: Ballston Spa, NY
Richard Johnston Colyer, 79, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2016 at his beloved home in Ballston Spa, NY with his loving wife by his side. He was born on April 12, 1937 in Cranford, NJ to the late Alan H. and Florence (Johnston) Colyer. Dick started working for Curtis Lumber Co. Inc.upon graduating from high school in 1955. He stayed with the company for over 50 years retiring as a Vice President.

Dick had a lifelong passion for Early American architecture and constructed his first house, a Cape Cod Cottage in the 1950s. He masterfully reconstructed a house that was built in Coventry, Conn. about 1774. A Colonial home that he and his family have lived in for many years.

Dick was not one to sit still. He was an avid downhill skier travelling far and wide with his beloved sweetheart, Fran, to enjoy the slopes of Vail, Steamboat and Tuckerman’s Ravine as well as ski the "powder" locally at Gore. Dick was also a cycling enthusiast completing a number of 100-mile Century Rides.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Frances S.(Stewart) Colyer, devoted children Peter S. Colyer of San Diego and Margaret (Randolph) Kristel of Indianapolis, loving brother Alan H. (Caran) Colyer of Burnt Hills, two grandchildren Mark and Blake Colyer as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dick is predeceased by his sisters Florence Markowski and Phyllis Boyton.

All are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, September 28 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY 12019. A memorial service will conclude the day at 5:00 PM.
Interment will be at a later date in the family plot at Briggs Cemetery.
