Obituary for Donald W. Ashby

Dateline - Scotia, NY
Donald W. Ashby, 80, passed away on October 3, 2016 after a time at Glendale Nursing Home. He was born in Mooresville, North Carolina on June 4, 1936 to the late James Lee Ashby and Clara (Watts) Ashby.
Don grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina graduating from A.L. Brown High School. He attended North Carolina State University attaining a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He also attended Seattle University in later years.
Donald had a long and successful career as an engineer beginning with Boeing Aircraft in Seattle shortly after graduating college. Don through his work for Boeing, had the privilege to be part of the Saturn V rocket design and the Apollo Space Program at Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa Beach, Florida. He worked as part of the engineering team responsible for the historic Apollo 11 mission. His work with Boeing continued until 1970 when he began his career with GE/Lockheed Martin. at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna, NY from which he retired in February 2000.
Don loved music and to sing. He was a member of the choir at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Octavo singers of Saratoga as well as the Burnt Hills Oratorio Society.
He also enjoyed the great outdoors and could often be found canoeing, hiking and traveling with his family.
Donald is survived by Sue, his beloved wife of 59 years; devoted sons Tearle Ashby of Ballston Spa and Braden Ashby of Warrensburg; and grandchildren Andrew and Ryann Ashby of Malta.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Sunday, October 30th from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church 547 Saratoga Road, Glenville, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00pm at the church.
Interment will be private at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie, NY .
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York, 4 Pine West Plaza Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205
