Obituary for
Lena F. Gerard
Dateline: Ballston Spa, NY
Lena F. Gerard, 82, of Ballston Spa, NY passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. She was born on October 22, 1934 in Ballston Spa. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ruby (LeBarron) Gerard.
Lena had a long and fulfilling career working as a secretary at General Electric in Schenectady, NY from which she retired in 1989. She made many friends while at GE and often took bus trips
to Atlantic City and other destinations which she enjoyed very much. She also kept in touch with her High School Classmates with whom she regularly met for lunch. She looked forward to those monthly gatherings, a time to remember younger days and hear new stories from friends about life’s most recent events.
She loved gardening and going to play BINGO with her friend Nellie, whom she adored. She loved birds and the smell of Lilac bushes. Every Fall, she went to the apple orchard, taking her sister, Leona and her children along. She also enjoyed watching old tv shows and the Hallmark Mystery Channel. In recent years she had become fond of solar figurines which she had placed on the shelf, near the window so she could watch them move.
It was the simple things that gave Lena the most pleasure. A visit from a family member, lunch at the Burnt Hills Diner or a Blackwood family gathering having pizza, playing games and doing crafts.
Her life was filled with selfless acts of kindness towards her family. She took care of everyone’s needs first, never asking for anything in return. Whether it was a weekly car ride to the grocery store, the hair salon, a place to stay or full-time home health aide.. she was always there when anyone needed her. She was always the responsible one, the bookkeeper, the landlord and caregiver.
She had a great sense of humor and could crack a joke even in the worst of situations. She made you laugh and smile at some of the things she would say. She was quick-witted and her memory was as sharp as a tack.
Lena was a strong and very determined woman. She knew what she wanted and she wasn’t afraid to let you know what that was. We marvel at her independence and will forever cherish the memory of a beautiful woman who lived her life with a caring and compassionate heart.
She is survived by her Brother-In-Law, Lindley S. Blackwood, and the Beloved Aunt of Larry Blackwood (Dawn), Sandy Stanislowsky (George), Dawn Fewkes, Clifford Russ (Vilma), Kathy McCann (James), Gail Tupman, Cheryl Wormall (Davis), Debbie Gyomory (Paul), Nelson Gerard (Susan), Crystal Bunnell (Mike), Marcy Meaney (John), Linda Mullen (David), Lori Kisielis (John) and several great nieces and nephews.
Lena was predeceased by her siblings Ida Gray, Mildred Gagne (Henry), Eleanor Russ (Worden), Leona Blackwood, Thomas Gerard (Marie) and Nina Fountain (Robert).
