Obituary for Elizabeth O. "Bette" Mitchell (Oliver)

Dateline: Glenville, NY

Elizabeth “Bette” Oliver Mitchell, age 97, of Rensselaer, NY, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017.

Bette was born in Scotland and came to the United States at age two, with her parents, the late Elizabeth and Joseph Oliver. The family settled in Old Greenwich, CT. She later met and married Paul H. Mitchell. They moved to Stamford, CT, where they began to raise their family.

When Paul was transferred to the Troy area, Bette enthusiastically established a new home in East Greenbush, where she lived for 49 years. Recently, she enjoyed living at Judson Meadows Assisted Living in Glenville, where she made many new friends.

Bette was always game to try new things and she was a natural leader, participating in book clubs, golf leagues, bowling groups, ski clubs and bridge tournaments. She enjoyed traveling with Paul throughout the United States and overseas. Whether climbing the pyramids of Egypt or visiting relatives in Scotland, she loved soaking up the history and adventures travel provided. She was an avid Yankee fan and always cheered them on through the good and bad years.

Bette was the ultimate homemaker, a wonderful cook, party planner, seamstress, craftswoman who was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her mother, whom she cared for in her home.

Her husband, Paul, predeceased her in 2010. She is survived by her daughter, Robin (Ralph) Cardone, her son William (Christine) Mitchell, grandsons Jonathan and Jason Cardone, Justin Travis and Zachary Mitchell; her great grandchildren Mitchell Cooper, Brady, Victoria and Elizabeth Cardone, and Arthur and Lincoln Mitchell; her loving niece, Jayne Ruesch also survives her.
